CLARE RAE
TESTING, CLIMBING THE WALL AND OTHER ACTIONS
My art practice engages with representation and its relationship to feminism. Utilising the artists’ body as a strategy to investigate ideas of the gaze, and the spectator/surveyed dynamic, is crucial for my work. Like the reclamation that took place in the 1960’s and 70’s, I’m seeking a methodology of working with the body that defies passivity. Whilst the actions taking place are not in themselves particularly dangerous, a gentle testing of physical boundaries and limitations is approached via a child-like exploration of the physical environment. By drawing on my own experience of feminine identity I aim to produce works that, rather than speak for woman-kind, articulate an individual understanding and perspective.
